I know that Brooks doesn't much cotton to Obama, but I read this column as a grudging admission that he is, in fact, rooted in the real world and not just an arugula-eating, Proust-quoting wuss. Nobody gets elected to any office without making compromises, both large and small, and deciding not to bring a knife to a gunfight is just common sense. Our so-called public campaign financing reform is so riddled with corruption-enabling loopholes that it needs to be euthanized.
I spent last summer reading Doris Kearns Goodwin's "Team of Rivals," so my ears have perked up whenever I've heard BO mention it -- which has been pretty often, actually. It appears to me that a presidential candidate could do worse than than picking Lincoln -- who saved this country as much with guile and hardball politics as with intellectual acumen and inspired oratory -- as a role model.
Barack's always had the smarts and the speeches down, and I'm glad he's going to back it up with firepower.

I love how the more Obama exposes himself as a Machiavellian hypocrite, the more former Clinton supporters glom onto him.
Oh, I know, I know. Gotta be realistic, gotta understand the way things are. I'm there. But, you know, I'm not flipping for joy with every slimy sleight of hand.
(Not pointing fingers at ANYBODY on this blog, just making a general observation. That is all, truly.)

Umm, Jay-
Evidently you don't read the polls.
But you're not wrong, in that Tennessee isn't going to be a battleground state anyways, so you can go ahead and vote for Bob Barr or Lyndon LaRouche or Betty Bean and be secure in the knowledge that the Volunteer State will remain reliably red.
No worries.
p.s.: Talk to your friends in Georgia and get them to vote for Barr, too! Support their native son!

I don't recall you being upset about Bush's campaign....Either of them.
I wasn't. I'm just welcoming you to the club!
Bobo is the political elitist who thinks Obama isn't suited for President because the Dem candidate would be out of place at an Applebee's salad bar.
Except, aside from the otherwise total absurdity of such a remark, Applebee's does not have a salad bar.

I got no problem with this. I want my politicians to be effective, which means they can't walk around all goo-goo eyed.
However, I'm afraid this will upset some of Obama's more goo-goo eyed supporters.
Brooks is a moron, only disingenuous.

that the Democrats will lose (the White House) again and I can vote for the Libertarian and not fret.

Ugh.
Have we completely lost the purpose of and correct symbol for the apostrophe?
"Obama tacks away from his left-wing base"
More evidence of the category of "left-wing" being meaningless.
