First quarter Redflex revenues

Speaking of traffic, here's the report on first quarter 2008 revenues from Knoxville red light cameras:
2008 Program Collections 010108-033108
Fines paid to City of Knoxville= 266,685.27
Payment to Redflex= 417,631.54
Program total= 684,316.81

The crash rate analysis for these intersections is as follows:
Total Crashes during the enforcement period 2008= 108
Total Crashes during the same period 2007= 153
Percentage of change= -29%
Total number of angle crashes during the enforcement period 2008= 30
Total number of angle crashes during the same period 2007= 25
Percentage of change= +20% **
Total number of rear-end crashes during enforcement period 2008= 61
Total number of rear-end crashes during same period 2007= 85
Percentage of change= -28%
Total number of rear-end crashes attributed to red-light cameras= 0
**Note- although this is the first indicated increase in angle crashes since the program began, when compared to the quarterly 2006 angle crash report the rate for 2008 continues to indicate a decline. The example is that for the 7 intersections in 2005 accounted for 25 angle crashes over a 3 month period. This can be compared to the first quarter of 2008 where 15 intersections accounted for 30. The 2008 rate averages 10 per month or less than 1 per intersection per month. The 2005 pre-camera rate averaged just over 8 per month or more than 1 per intersection per month. It is possible that the program has reached a plateau in reducing angle crashes. The second quarter 2008 will provide more data for comparison.

taking into account the jobs redflex provides locally and the rent they pay on their space, that's still a lot of money leaving the local economy in a three month period ..

It appears as though the RedFlex cameras have reduced crashes and increased safety while simultaneously providing revenue to the City...not to mention that they were integral to the arrest of a criminal. The downside seems to be that folks are hung up on the profit motive of the company.
In my view, RedFlex cameras serve as a tool to the KPD...just as weapons do, gasoline in patrol cars, patrol cars, in-car cameras, tasers, etc. In each of these cases, a 3rd party entity profits from the use of the tool they supply and in my opinion, RedFlex should be viewed no differently. They developed a technology that is beneficial and they profit from it.
It's obvious that the incident of traffic accidents have declined but I wonder if traffic flow declined during the 2008 period from people taking alternative routes to avoid the cameras? Just curious. For some reason I'm unable to access the site.

The intersection at Broadway and I 640 is NOT adequately marked. I am one of the safest drivers in the world, and I ran that light a couple of weeks ago. The merge is IMPOSSIBLE without the light being invisible. Look at the stats: 5,928 offenders since Jan 1!!!!!!!!!! What a crock of crap!!!!

Knoxville drivers could end Redflex's profits in this city tomorrow if they'd stop running red lights.
I don't think that will happen.
